Growers know the primary macronutrients needed to produce high yielding crops are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK.) However, secondary and micronutrients are just as important as NPK – but there are two different approaches to micronutrient use. Some growers will apply micronutrients in a preventative way to ensure that no deficiencies occur. Others will wait to apply micronutrients until deficiencies are shown in the plant. Both options are viable, but preventative micronutrient application is a sure way to improve plant health and reduce yield loss from nutrient deficiency and tie-up.
Foliar Micronutrients
Foliar micronutrients are balanced blends of commonly deficient micronutrients that are applied by foliar, or sprayed, application onto food and fiber crops. Common micronutrients and what plant processes they assist with are below:
When used alongside healthy agronomic practices, the essential micronutrients will supplement the overall nutritional needs of the plant, including photosynthesis, cell wall formation and hormone production.
What is Moxon?
Moxon B, Moxon Mn, and Moxon Cu from CHS are designed to help provide crops with balanced plant nutrition. All three products are strategically designed for maximum uptake to satisfy a crop’s needs and contain the patented Levesol® chelate to provide better nutrient availability.
Levesol® Zn is a zinc solution equipped with the patented Levesol chelate and is designed to enhance the nutrient availability of phosphorus and other micronutrients, such as Boron (B), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu) and Manganese (Mn). Levesol® Zn is designed to be applied with starter fertilizers and is a great solution to kick-off micronutrient fertility at planting time.
Moxon B is a 7.5% foliar boron micronutrient. Boron is highly responsive in row crops and is a major component in the grain development process for crops. It also plays an important role in regulating plants' hormone levels and promoting proper growth.
Moxon Mn is a 5% foliar manganese micronutrient. Manganese is one of the most common deficiencies in soybean and pulse crops, and shortages can negatively impact the photosynthesis process in the plant. Applications of Moxon Mn help reduce this deficiency and can even increase the availability of calcium and phosphorus to the plant.
In addition to containing 10% Nitrogen and 0.5% copper, Moxon Cu contains a low salt, highly efficient source of nitrogen that enhances rapid nitrogen absorption while helping with the uptake of other critical nutrients.
Moxon Application
For the best response from micronutrients, it may take multiple applications to provide the proper amount to the plant. Moxon B and Moxon Mn, apply 1-4 pt as a foliar application to prevent or alleviate B or Mn deficiency.
Moxon Cu can be applied as a foliar spray on a wide range of crops to correct nitrogen and copper deficiencies and/or improve growth. The use rates vary based on nitrogen and copper needs, but often range between 1-10 gal/A (with most in the 1-3 gal/A range).
Additionally, Moxon Cu can be custom blended with other primary, secondary and micronutrients, as well as many crop protection chemicals.
When using Moxon B, Moxon Cu, and Moxon Mn, always read and follow the pesticide label Instructions. For best results, an initial jar test is recommended.
