Get the most from herbicide applications

Improving post‑emergence herbicide performance through smarter adjuvant selection.
May 13, 2026

Post‑emergence herbicide applications often take place when conditions aren’t ideal. Weeds may be larger than planned, weather windows can be narrow and crops are actively growing alongside unwanted competition. In these moments, the difference between adequate control and effective control often comes down to how well the herbicide reaches, adheres to and moves into the target weed.

That’s where the right post‑emergence adjuvant plays an important role. CHS offers two proven options, Last Chance® Pro and Tapran®, designed to help growers get more performance out of post‑emergence herbicide applications when it counts most.

Why adjuvants matter post‑emergence

Post‑emergence applications rely on contact with leaf surfaces rather than soil placement. Environmental factors like dust, heat, humidity, leaf waxiness and canopy density can all influence how well an herbicide is retained and absorbed.

Adjuvants are formulated to support herbicide performance by:

  • Improving spray retention and coverage on leaf surfaces
  • Enhancing uptake and movement of active ingredients into the plant
  • Reducing off‑target movement and droplet drift

Selecting the correct adjuvant helps ensure that the herbicide investment performs as intended without increasing rates or adding extra passes

Supporting uptake and translocation

Last Chance® Pro is a post‑emergence adjuvant designed to improve deposition, uptake and translocation of herbicides within the weed. It functions as a high‑performance deposition aid that helps keep spray droplets where they land and supports consistent absorption through the leaf surface.

Key features of Last Chance Pro include:

  • Improved spray deposition on target weeds
  • Enhanced uptake for systemic herbicides
  • Support for consistent performance across variable conditions

Last Chance Pro is commonly positioned in post‑emergence programs where maximizing herbicide efficiency is critical, especially when weeds are larger or environmental conditions limit spray performance. By improving how herbicides enter and move within the plant, it helps herbicides do their job more effectively without changing the base chemistry.

Improving coverage, stability, and canopy penetration

Tapran is a high‑surfactant oil concentrate, formulated with refined soybean oil and built‑in surfactant technology to improve spray coverage and canopy penetration during post‑emergence applications.

Tapran is designed to:

  • Help spray droplets spread evenly across leaf surfaces
  • Improve herbicide absorption, particularly on difficult‑to‑wet weeds
  • Reduce off‑target movement through built‑in deposition aids

Its formulation provides flexibility across a broad range of post‑emergence herbicides, making it a reliable option when managing dense canopies or targeting weeds with thick cuticles and waxy leaf surfaces. This balance of coverage and control supports more uniform herbicide activity across the field.

Matching the adjuvant to the application

Both Last Chance Pro and Tapran support post‑emergence herbicide performance, but they serve slightly different roles:

  • Last Chance Pro is often favored when uptake and translocation are the priority
  • Tapran is well suited for improving spray coverage, stability, and penetration

Working with a CHS agronomist helps determine which adjuvant fits best based on crop stage, weed spectrum, herbicide selection and application conditions.

Protecting the herbicide investment

Post‑emergence applications represent a significant investment, not just in product, but also in time, labor, and application costs. Adjuvants that improve consistency and efficacy help protect that investment by increasing the likelihood that the application delivers the intended result the first time.

The right adjuvant doesn’t replace good herbicide selection or sound timing, but it plays a critical supporting role in helping post‑emergence programs perform when conditions are less than perfect.
