When growers consider fungicide applications in corn, disease control is often the primary focus. However, corn also faces environmental stress from heat, drought, excessive moisture, wind, and hail. Fungicide decisions should be based not only on disease management, but also on protecting overall plant health and yield potential.

Both fungicide selection and application timing are critical. BASF products like Veltyma® fungicide provide long-lasting disease control while helping crops better manage environmental stress. Base Recommendation: One Application at VT

For many fields, a single application of 7 fl oz/A of Veltyma fungicide at full tassel (VT) provides a strong foundation for disease and stress management. BASF research across the Corn Belt has demonstrated consistent performance and return on investment with this timing across a wide range of environments.

An application at VT protects the crop during a critical period for grain development and helps preserve photosynthetic leaf area through grain fill, supporting yield potential whether challenges come from disease, drought, heat, or other stressors.

Enhanced Protection: Increased Rate at VT

One of the advantages of Veltyma fungicide is the ability to adjust rates based on field conditions. When additional protection is needed, growers can increase the application rate from 7 fl oz/A to 10 fl oz/A. 

An increased Veltyma fungicide rate may be worth considering when:

  • There is a history of tar spot or other foliar diseases.
  • Corn-on-corn production
  • Susceptible hybrids planted
  • Risk for multiple disease threats
  • Significant environmental stress potential

The increased rate of Veltyma fungicide can extend residual protection and, in some situations, provide enough season-long activity to eliminate the need for a second fungicide application.

Specialized Recommendation: Two-Pass Program

Where disease develops early or favorable conditions persist throughout the season, a two-pass program may offer the greatest protection. This strategy includes sequential 7 fl oz/A applications of Veltyma fungicide at first tassel and again at R2-R3.

A two-pass approach is best suited for:

  • Early-season disease development
  • Extended disease-favorable conditions
  • Susceptible hybrids
  • Severe or persistent tar spot pressure
  • High-yield management systems where protecting every potential bushel is a priority
