Enhancing soybean yield performance under heat and drought stress

Among the most challenging conditions for soybeans are heat and drought, both of which disrupt physiological processes critical for crop productivity.

Drought stress reduces root water uptake and causes stomata to close, limiting photosynthesis and overall growth. Even short dry periods during reproductive stages can reduce pod number and seed size, leading to substantial yield loss. Research indicates that drought can reduce yield by more than 25 percent in affected regions, especially where irrigation is not available, and rainfall is unpredictable.

High temperatures also take a toll on soybean yield performance. When heat stress occurs during reproductive growth, crops often show lower chlorophyll content, decreased pod set, and lighter seed weight. Studies have documented up to a 21 percent reduction in seed weight, with yield declining nearly five percent for every one-degree increase during sensitive growth stages.

BASF replicated greenhouse trial results, 2023. The average weight of fresh leaves and stems on treatment plants that were exposed to 6 days of drought conditions, 19 days after application. Revytek fungicide applied at 8 fl oz/A. Analysis via Student Neuman Keuls at P = 0.05. For all replicates of treated plants only Revytek fungicide drought response ratings were significantly different than the untreated control.
