A systematic approach to optimizing performance

August 31, 2023 4:00 p.m.

As many customers know, protecting plant health is critical when maximizing crop performance. Crop protection products help the plant to better tolerate stress conditions and preserve yield potential. As providers of DEKALB® and Asgrow® brands, we not only have the privilege of offering tailored product solutions fit for specific conditions, but can also offer advice on Bayer’s best-in-class integrated crop protection portfolio of seed treatments, fungicides, and weed and insect control products – all cohesively working together to help protect the full genetic potential of the seed and optimize performance for the customer.

Seed is the Foundation

Choosing the latest seed technology is one of the most important decisions customers will make for their operation when looking to drive performance and profitability potential.

DEKALB corn remains focused on delivering higher yield while offering better crop protection against environmental stress, pests and disease. Today, all DEKALB products include leading biotechnology, diverse global germplasm and exclusive genetics not found in any other seed bag, along with local agronomic support for season-long success.

With exclusive genetics, Asgrow® XtendFlex® soybeans continue to deliver significant yield improvements and improved plant health, as well as enhanced weed- and insect-control options. Our research and development pipeline applies the use of advanced breeding for native traits, biotechnology and agronomic solutions.

Crop Protection to Help Customers Optimize Performance

Seed Treatment —We know every field is different and every crop has its unique set of challenges.

Seed treatments offer advanced products that protect against early-season insects and diseases. For example, seed treatment fungicides are a great tool to help provide protection in less-than-ideal early season conditions, particularly in cold, wet soils or compacted soils that are excessively dry. These conditions can slow germination and emergence, leaving seed and seedlings more susceptible to attack.

Foliar Fungicides As we’ve all learned, foliar fungicides are very important in managing disease. For example, a properly timed corn foliar fungicide application around the tasseling growth stage can greatly improve overall plant health and help protect yield potential. Fungicides can work better at preventing rather than curing disease. Foliar diseases of corn are a concern when they develop early and progress up the plant before grain fill is complete. Some corn diseases to watch for include northern corn leaf blight, gray leaf spot rust, eyespot, tar spot and Anthracnose leaf blight. Begin scouting fields for foliar disease symptoms just before tasseling and continue through the grain filling stages of growth. Rapid grain filling occurs from R2 (blister) to late R5 (full dent). Examine the ear leaf and leaves above and below the ear at several locations throughout a field. If disease is present on the majority of leaves, a fungicide application may be necessary. Bayer remains committed to bringing the latest exclusive genetics from DEKALB corn, as well as crop protection and disease modeling to assure the best systems-based solutions to manage disease and maximize potential performance.

Weed and Insect Control Controlling weed and insect pressure is beneficial for many reasons, including reducing plant stress. Weeds can take essential nutrients from the plant and attract insects — making the plant more prone to plant stress. For corn, TriVolt™ herbicide helps to consistently control broadleaf weeds and grasses with burndown and residual control. Asgrow® XtendFlex® soybeans offer the industry’s first triple-stacked soybean trait containing tolerance to dicamba, glyphosate and glufosinate to help farmers control tough-to-manage weeds.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. It is a violation of federal and state law to use any pesticide product other than in accordance with its labeling. NOT ALL formulations of dicamba, glyphosate or glufosinate are approved for in-crop use with products with XtendFlex® Technology. ONLY USE FORMULATIONS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY LABELED FOR SUCH USES AND APPROVED FOR SUCH USE IN THE STATE OF APPLICATION. Contact the U.S. EPA and your state pesticide regulatory agency with any questions about the approval status of dicamba herbicide products for in-crop use with products with XtendFlex® Technology.
