Counter Later Emerging Weeds With Overlapping Residuals

Starting with a clean seedbed may not be enough to eliminate early-season weed competition as tough weeds, such as Palmer amaranth and waterhemp, can emerge anytime from early spring to late summer.

Both yield-robbing weeds have a rapid growth rate, a wide germination window and are resistant to multiple modes of action.

“Palmer amaranth and common waterhemp are difficult to control because of their continued emergence at a time when many preemergence herbicides have played out. This is especially true in wet years when herbicides break down more rapidly. says John Pawlak, senior project development manager for Valent U.S.A.

After a preemergence herbicide application, soybean growers often need additional residual control to help shut out weeds until canopy. Following up a preemergence application with a postemergence herbicide with long lasting residual activity and proven control of small-seeded broadleaf weeds and grasses can help bridge that gap.

Between planting and canopy closure, controlling yield-limiting weeds and managing potential resistance can be challenging. To ensure a soybean crop remains weed-free through canopy, herbicide programs that deliver overlapping residual activity offer the protection growers need for optimized yield potential.

“Eight plus weeks of weed control is required before the soybean canopy will out-compete Palmer amaranth and waterhemp,” Pawlak says. “A postemergence herbicide, such as Perpetuo® Herbicide, is a flexible option that offers proven, long-lasting residual control of yield-robbing weeds.”

Perpetuo provides growers with application flexibility, rotational flexibility and controls both the weeds in a grower’s field and the weeds that have not yet emerged, including Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, , velvetleaf and other small-seeded broadleaf and grassy weeds.

With a low use rate and two active ingredients – pyroxasulfone and flumiclorac – Perpetuo offers both residual and burndown activity for more complete weed control. Perpetuo an also be used with any trait system, including the Xtend® and Enlist® and RoundUp® soybean systems and is tank mix compatible with many crop protection products.
