Tar spot was one of the most detrimental and costliest corn diseases in 2021, so be prepared to fight tar spot with Veltyma® fungicide this season. Tar spot wasn’t identified in the United States until 2015, but it has spready rapidly and continues to have a drastic impact on corn. This disease has a very long latent period – the time between disease infection and visual symptomology appears. Tar spot also progresses quickly, with the ability to completely cover plants in as little as two weeks! Hence, the importance of preventative, planned fungicide applications. Waiting until visual symptoms appear is simply too late.   Infections can begin as early as V8 and favorable environmental conditions for disease development include: temperatures between 60-70°F, high relative humidity (>75%), and extended periods of leaf wetness (which can often occur at night). Tar spot overwinters on corn residue, and spores can also blow in from neighboring fields.

This trial was conducted in Arlington, Wisconsin. All products were applied on July 7, 2021. Ear leaf pictures were taken 62 days after application on September 22, 2021.  Veltyma® fungicide resulted in a 18.4 bushel per acre increase compared to the untreated control.
