Use a Preventive Fungicide for Disease Control and Added Plant-Health Benefits

Fusarium head blight (scab) is considered one of the most economically damaging wheat diseases in the U.S. by the Crop Protection Network, and it’s no surprise as to why. Head scab can reduce yields by up to 45% and can reduce grain quality by increasing DON levels, which could mean dockage or rejection at the elevator.

In 2021, this disease reduced yields across the Midwest as a result of weather conditions during the later growing stages. Reports from the Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative show that drought conditions last season allowed for reduced disease pressure but brought lower yields and test weights. Other Midwest states received rainfall at the wrong times causing issues with pre-harvest sprouting and delayed fungicide applications, creating the perfect conditions for head scab to develop.

Although recent reports show that head scab risk is relatively low in the Midwest, this is subject to change along with weather conditions throughout the summer.

To protect grain quality and yield potential this season, applying a preventive fungicide with activity against head scab may be warranted. Plus, with the right fungicide and cleaner disease-free fields, you should also consider if your fungicide offers greener plant-health benefits such as:

  • Greener leaves that allow more light absorption and energy capture for maximum grain fill.
  • Greener plants that help reduce the rate of water loss and optimize nutrient-use efficiency and grain development.
  • Healthier crops that have unmatched standability and harvestability for a more profitable and efficient harvest that saves fuel, time and ultimately money.

Cleaner and greener benefits help ensure greener, healthier and more efficient crops, producing higher quality grain with improved color, vigor and harvest efficiency. These plant-health benefits combined with proven head scab control can result in more potential bushels in the bin, protecting your bottom line.

For 2022, consider applying Miravis® Ace fungicide from Syngenta which offers unmatched application flexibility as early as 50% head emergence up to flowering. With the added power of Adepidyn® technology, Miravis Ace provides long-lasting, next-level disease control that helps increase potential yield, lower DON levels for improved grain quality and provide greater confidence at the elevator. The result – by choosing Miravis Ace you can experience better yields and a better deal than competitive brands.
